(1) Q: In one versus one, how do you get an uncontested shot on offense?

A: Creating space between you and your defender will give you a better chance of an uncontested shot.

(2) Q: How do you get closer to the hoop?

A: You can get closer to the hoop usually by going past your defender, usually either by dribbling or using your body, or both. (You can also get closer by backing down your defender, but we won’t focus on that tactic too much for now).

(3) Q: How do we create space between our defender, or get past our defender?

A: We will break the possibilities down into phases:

  • before the dribble

  • during the dribble

We will then focus on the final act of shooting (which can occur during either phase).

(4) Q: Will these phases work in all areas of the court?

A: We will divide the court into two general areas:

  • perimeter (where guards usually play)

  • post area (where posts usually play)

We will go through each phase and each area of the court in the next sections.
